For the love of food
Food, for me is an emotion. Having had a catering business, my mother is well known for her ability to whip up lip-smacking flavourful food, made aplenty. I grew up around delicious aromas emanating from the living room which would become an extension of the busy kitchen when my mother would have a particularly large order. My earliest memory with my mother is cooking with her, an activity I cherished. By the age of 5 I was able to cook my own omelette, and by the 4th grade I would often bake cakes after school, the few hours when the kitchen was not in use. Cooking soon became a sort of ritual, that began with arranging all the utensils, measuring spoons and cups and ingredients in an aesthetically pleasing arrangement. the recipe would be carefully read and followed. It was only when I started living alone and cooking for myself is when I started cooking more intuitively, tasting as I go, imagining the flavours and tweaking old recipes. As magical it all was, my relationship with food has never been an easy one, I am slowly learning how I used to use food as an escape, and to ‘fill a hole’. I am working towards changing that relationship by giving myself a whole lot of love and eating food that will nourish my body a well as my soul. In an attempt to represent that, I started illustrating this series of ingredients and recipes.
